Top Gun and Top Notch

VIRULENT WINDS never lets up and never disappoints. The F-15 (the mainstay of American battlefield air superiority) is no longer the top dog, and to make matters worse, its replacement is a MiG-41. Most authors would have stopped right there, but Jim Clonts takes us much further.

Clonts made the MiG-41 real. Obviously, he knows about military aircraft, systems and the tactics employed. He vividly paints a picture of the cockpit and takes us into combat against F-14, MiG-29, MiG-31 and a variety of ground based missile systems.

The story centers on two Arab countries: Sandor and Kumar, which are remarkably similar to Iran and Iraq. They are bent on developing WMD systems to direct either against each other or the rest of us. To thwart their efforts, a very black operation teams Russian and American pilots flying MiG- 41s against targets in both countries. But things aren’t always what they look like and not everyone has the same objective.

This is a great, great read. I wish I could give it 10 stars.

As an officer in the United States Air Force Jim Clonts served as a B-52 instructor radar-navigator for nearly ten years and flew ten bombing missions in Operation DESERT STORM. He is published in "Combat Crew Magazine," and has contributed a chapter to an Air University book entitled A Line in the Sand, and won second place in a national essay contest sponsored by the Freedom Foundation at Valley Forge.

THE MONUMENT PROJECT

The purpose of the monument exhibit is two-fold. First and foremost is the perpetual acknowledgement and appreciation of all who served their country with the Strategic Air Command. Secondarily, by constructing the monument with personalized bricks, the monument will allow names of SAC veterans, their family members and other proud citizen supporters of democracy to be placed on display with this Cold War reminder of the ultimate cost of freedom. Hopefully everyone who reads the names on the bricks will share the love, hard work and dedication expended by SAC service members everywhere in maintaining the peace during the very dangerous days of the Cold War. The monument is dedicated to everyone who has ever served their country with the Strategic Air Command and is designed to perpetuate the history of SAC and Carswell Air Force Base. Anyone who wishes to participate in this worthwhile project is invited to do so.
